According to media reports, a notification signed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan said that Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has been made the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. At the same time, Pervez Elahi thanked Imran Khan for appointing him as PTI president. Elahi said in a tweet, ‘No one has respected me like Imran Khan.
Parvez Elahi has a close relationship with Imran Khan
In fact, in February, former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi announced to join the PTI along with 10 former MPs from his party. Imran Khan and Pervez Elahi share a close relationship as the former Punjab chief minister pledged support to the former Pakistan prime minister. Then in January Chaudhry Parvez Elahi dissolved the Punjab Assembly on Imran Khan’s directive.
Decision to join PTI
Earlier on February 21, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhary announced that Chaudhary Pervez Elahi and other leaders have decided to join PTI. He made these remarks at a press conference with Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in Lahore after meeting former Punjab Chief Minister and Imran Khan. Fawad Chaudhary said in a press conference, ‘After a long discussion Parvez Elahi and other leaders have finally decided to join PTI today.’
Left the post of Chief Minister for Imran
In the same press conference, Elahi said that I have supported Imran Khan in difficult times and proved my loyalty by being the chief minister. While the two leaders were announcing Elahi’s decision to join the PTI, PML-Q president Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain expelled the former Punjab chief minister from the party. Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain said that he has been banned from using the name PML-Q in future.
Disagreement with cousin over party leadership
According to media reports, in January, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled in favor of Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain and declared him the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q). The ECP gave its verdict on a petition filed by the former prime minister of Pakistan amid a rift with his cousin Chaudhary Pervez Elahi over the leadership of the party. Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain approached the ECP after he was removed from the post of party president by the PML-Q’s Central Working Committee (CWC).
