Luigi isn’t having much luck, is he? If not cut Super Mario 64, he chases ghosts around haunted houses. Seriously, true Super Luigi Odyssey?
Now Mario’s bigger (younger) brother is once again frowned upon by Nintendo. This time, the house Mario built celebrated his successes in 2022 and looked forward to this year – without caring about Luigi.

Why has Nintendo forgotten Luigi?
To ring in the New Year, Nintendo tweeted “Happy New Year from Nintendo and the Mushroom Kingdom! Wahoo!” next to a picture of Mario, Yoshi, Toad, and Peach. While it was probably just a mistake to leave Luigi aside, it didn’t go unnoticed by fans.
One grumbled, “Huh, I think there’s another certain green character that could take Yoshi’s place, hmm who sure couldn’t be the second most important character in the entire Mario franchise.”
Another added: “Who is more important? – a brother of Mario, whose help Mario in any conflict against Bowser, a partner in crime with a good sense of humor, a lone haunted house explorer, a gigachad ghost buster Or – a mushroom and a sacrificial dinosaur.
A third said, “Anytime Luigi isn’t included in promotional stuff, I assume he’s kissing men offscreen. So if Nintendo wants to keep this up, they’re going to have a lot of explaining to do.”
Is Luigi in the next Mario game?
This isn’t the first time Nintendo has pranked Luigi. Last year, a similar tweet went viral when the gaming giant was accused of using renders from 2007. Some joked that they couldn’t find a render old enough, so they missed it altogether for 2023.
Sadly, Nintendo will never win. It’s like when Waluigi was MIA Super Smash Bros. Ultimateso it could always be worse for Luigi.
Fortunately, there are rumors that Luigi could have a much bigger role in the next mainline Mario game. While you should take all this with a grain of salt, an insider claimed that Luigi will be a playable character in the mythical Super Mario Odyssey 2.
If not, there’s always the rumor that we’ll get another 2D Mario game that lets you play as Mario and Peach. Meanwhile, angry gamers are creating their own 2023 celebrations that will get Luigi where he belongs.
