Mumbai: Smuggled from Dubai Rs. Gold worth Rs 4.62 crore was seized by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department at the Mumbai airport and a foreign tourist was arrested in this case. The passenger was identified as Yakub Mohammad Ahmad Al Balushi (51) and the court remanded him to judicial custody.
Yakub Mohammad, who arrived at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on a flight from Dubai on March 31, was intercepted by AIU officials near the Green Channel on suspicion. When Yakub’s belongings were seized, Rs. 4.62 crore worth of gold was recovered. A case was registered against Yakub for gold smuggling and he was arrested. To whom Yakub had brought the gold, an investigation is being carried out, the official said.
It may be mentioned here that last month the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) collected Rs. Drugs worth 70 crores were seized. A Nigerian was also arrested from a hotel after his interrogation.
